An Improved One-Dimensional Bending Angle Forward Operator for the Assimilation of Radio Occultation Profiles in the Lower Troposphere

چکیده

Abstract Under very large vertical gradients of atmospheric refractivity, which are typical at the height planetary boundary layer, assimilation radio occultation (RO) observations into numerical weather prediction (NWP) models presents several serious challenges. In such conditions, RO bending angle profiles is an ill-posed problem, uncertainty associated with higher, and one-dimensional forward operator used to assimilate these has theoretical deficiencies. As a result, larger percentage rejected NWP centers by existing quality control procedures, potentially limiting benefits this data type improve forecasting in lower troposphere. To address problems, new methodology that enables be extended moist troposphere been developed. Challenges refractivity partially overcome reformulation minimal effect higher altitudes. first step toward effort, study both development forecast impact assessment it using NCEP system. Though conservative approach, tropical already noticeable. The encouraging results work open potential for further exploitation optimization assimilation.

Assimilation with a two-dimensional bending angle operator at ECMWF

ECMWF plans to start assimilating GPS radio occultation measurements with a two dimensional (2D) bending angle operator in 2014. We will describe the new operator, and explain how it has been implemented on the parallel computing system. Issues relating to the computational cost of the operator will be discussed, and a new hybrid approach using a 2D operator in the 4D-Var outer-loop and a 1D op...

Radio-holographic analysis of Microlab-1 radio occultation data in the lower troposphere

[1] The interpretation of radio occultation data in the lower troposphere is a complicated problem due to strong multipath effects. This problem can be solved on the basis of the wave optics. We analyze Microlab-1 radio occultation using two radio-holographic approaches: the radio-optics method, which employs the analysis of the local spatial spectra of the registered wave field, and the canoni...

The Assimilation of Radio Occultation Measurements

GPS radio occultation (RO) measurements are a potentially important new source of profile information that can be used in numerical weather prediction (NWP). This paper outlines the options for assimilating the RO measurements into an operational NWP system. The importance of realistic estimates for the observation error estimates is discussed.

Canonical transform method for processing radio occultation data in the lower troposphere

[1] The methods of processing radio occultation data in multipath zones which were used up to now have very strong restrictions of the applicability. In this paper, we introduce a new approach to the problem of deciphering the ray structure of wave fields in multipath zones using the short-wave asymptotic solution of the wave problem. In geometric optics a canonical transform resolves multipath...
